Common Crane Terms and Abbreviations

Dec 12, 2023

1. Axial load : Refers to the combined vertical force exerted on the supporting structure, for jib cranes.

2. Anti-Double Blocking : The Anti-Double Blocking (ATB) system is an important safety feature of the crane. By using an ATB system, crane operators can avoid "double-block" accidents and damage to hoists, hooks, ropes, pulleys or other components.

3. Ballast : It is a heavy material placed on the base of the crane to enhance stability and resist tilting moments.

4. Base : The primary support that keeps the crane upright, connected to the ground or a fixed structure such as a concrete foundation or deck platform.

5. Beam of Light : The main horizontal structure in a crane with adjustable length that carries and transfers the load to the vertical lifting mechanism. The beam is available in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be used as a track for moving overhead crane trolleys or hoist heads.

6. Dead load : The weight of the crane itself or other permanent structural components that remains constant during crane operation.

7. Deflection : Crane deflection occurs when the structural components of the crane bend or buckle under load. The boom is designed to safely absorb load forces through elastic deformation.

8. IP level : An internationally recognized protection level, indicating the equipment's protection capabilities against water, dust, and solid particles. The higher the IP level, the better the protection effect.

9. HPU : A crane's hydraulic power unit (HPU) is a system that generates and delivers hydraulic power to operate the crane's hydraulic functions. It is usually driven by an electric motor.

10. MPM : Abbreviation for "meters per minute", indicating how many meters per minute the crane can travel.

11. NDT : Non-destructive testing evaluates crane materials and components without causing damage to ensure they meet requirements.

12. SWL : Safe working load refers to the maximum load that the crane is designed to handle safely. Failure to comply with the specified SWL may result in serious risks. SWL is usually marked on the boom and may also refer to the crane model.

13. WLL : Working load limit, similar to SWL, refers to the maximum safe weight that a lifting equipment, device or accessory can bear.

14. HOL: Lift height, the vertical distance between the lowest and highest points of travel when a crane lifts a load.

15. VFD : Variable Frequency Drive is a motor control device that drives the motor by adjusting the frequency and voltage of the power supply and controls the starting, acceleration and deceleration process of the motor.
